Dancing for Safe Haven Family Shelter Event A Great Success
Safe Haven Family Shelter celebrated 25 years of serving homeless families in Middle Tennessee with Dancing for Safe Haven on Friday, April 9th, at Hutton Hotel. In total, the inaugural event garnered close to $88,000. The raised funds will provide shelter and transitional services to homeless families with children; empowering them to achieve lasting self-sufficiency.
Miss America 2004 Erika Dunlap and singer-songwriter Gary Chapman led the audience as the evenings’ emcees. The competition was judged in three different categories: Online Favorite, Judges’ Favorite and Audience Favorite. Mark Volman, professor at Belmont University and founding member of The Turtles, was awarded with Online Favorite. Kelly Sutton, of Tennessee Mornings of Fox 17 WZTV, wowed the crowd with a spectacular routine that brought them to their feet and was awarded Audience Favorite. Jim Shulman, board president of Safe Haven and Deputy Commissioner for the Tennessee Department of Health, won over the judges and received Judges’ Favorite.
“The inaugural Dancing for Safe Haven was truly a team effort and a labor of love,” stated Joyce Lavery, executive director for Safe Haven. “The event exceeded our expectations and we are extremely thankful for the amazing support shown from the community,” she continued. “We would like to extend a huge thank you to all the dancers, both celebrity and professional, for believing in our mission. Because the event was a huge success, the funds we raised will empower our families at Safe Haven, helping them achieve lasting self-sufficiency.”
